Description

Here it is, my first piece of Deltora Quest fanart in almost ten years of sketching.:awe:  Why it took me so long, I don't even... Well, added slowness came from my schedule. For this picture alone I could only spend about a half hour a day coloring it. In my slowpoke case, that's not a lot of photoshop elements/sketchbook pro time : P

These are the three main characters as I imagined them from the books, blending both my current imagination and what I can recall imagining when I first read them at the age of 8. Overall I'm pretty happy with it, but I will probably make some tweaks to the character designs in future pieces. Let's start from the right:
Barda -- I've always thought of Barda as having brown hair, either curly or wavy. I kind of imagine him looking like Little John from BBC's Robin Hood (played by Gordon Kennedy, I think), when Little John had short hair in season 1, but with lighter hair and perhaps slightly more beard Grin revamp He's described as having "rough but clean" clothes in the book, so I figured I'd make them pretty plain and basic here.
Lief -- Ok, when I first saw the anime I thought it was a neat coincidence that Lief had a predominantly green outfit with a dark blue cloak, because that's how I've always imagined him (though not nearly as brightly clothed). Though the design swerves at that point, because for me Lief has dark brown hair. I mean, how could a dark-haired Toran boy be mistaken for Lief if Lief were blonde? Don't the grey guards have his description? Moving on... I don't know why I picture him with gray eyes, but I do Big Grin
Side note: that darn cloak was a challenge, and yet strangely fun, to make
Jasmine -- Out of the three, I'm most challenged by Jasmine's design. When I originally read the books, I always imagined her hair to be straight, and messy in a windswept tangle sort of way. However, my more detail-minded current self knows she is described as having "wild black curls." I drew and re-drew her hair so many times :shakehead: I never pictured her to be much shorter than Lief, so I didn't make her tiny. I drew her repurposed grey guard clothing loose on her, since 1) they probably all out-size her and 2) she's supposed to be able to pass as a boy when her hair is covered.
Filli -- I assumed as a child Filli was a squirrel. With a big bushy tail, and little tufts at the ends of his ears. I don't know if it's silly of me... but I can't replace that idea of Filli in my mind.
Kree -- I really enjoyed deciding how I was going to position Kree in the pic. It was a challenge, having him swooping at the viewer from behind the group, but overall I like how he turned out. It's a bit hard to see, but I also put a bit of sheen to his feathers along his back and part of the wings.

Lately I've been having a lot of DQ-themed sketches in my notebooks, ever since starting to read the first series to my new lineolated parakeet, Nym, as part of getting her used to my voice in a non-invasive manner. So there will definitely be more to come

Funny thing, grey eyes used to be the symbol of purity and wisdom. So giving them to Lief is kind of logical, in a way
