Why so dark? I don't know, I guess I was in a mood. 
The first thought that came to my mind after the story of Alma Toran was told: I don't think depravity is freedom from fate, but rather an alignment with a different fate. This darker path is still determined by the will of another, and the "freedom" of their actions is just a lie. Which would mean you can't beat Al Thamen through depravity... not if the fall aligns your actions with their ultimate agenda.
But hey, that's just a theory. I don't have concrete proof. Agree? Disagree? Let me know!
